Food 4 Kids mission of "passionately pursuing a hunger free community” continues to drive the members to innovate to feed the students and their siblings at South Woods Elementary School in Elkton during these uncertain times.
However, concerns about purchasing trips to the grocery store, unavailable or limited quantities of food, school access, handling and disinfecting backpacks all became opportunities for this 100% volunteer workforce to pivot and design a new distribution process.
Food will now be packed in sufficient quantity to feed 2 children for 12 weeks. Due to the unavailability of shelf stable milk, program participants will now be provided with 2 gallons of fresh milk and fresh bread each month which will be picked up at Dollar General stores in the community.
Volunteers engaged in packing activities the first week of September at South Woods Elementary School in Elkton. Volunteers adhered to CDC COVID-19 guidelines. Families will pick up the boxes and bagged foods which will carry them for 12 weeks.
The cost of the food remains at $25/month per student, however the revised milk purchase has increased costs an additional $10/month so to feed a child and give them milk and bread will cost $35 per child per month.
